How Do The Amish Have Time to Quilt? (part 2)
While this all may sound like forced labor or a type of servitude to most modern women, you have to remember that the Amish choose to live this way and most of them don't have any understanding of how to live otherwise. They enjoy the simple things in life and appreciate the lifestyles that they have. Their structured and strict ways of living offer little in the ways for Amish women to express their creativity, so the design and development of Amish quilts is a welcome escape for most Amish quilters. While many of us will sit in front of the TV or go to the movies or play on the computer for a couple of hours to escape the stresses of the day, Amish women quilt. Being able to use bright colors and bold designs to express themselves is a relaxing and enjoyable activity for them. The Amish despise nothing more than idleness and quilting gives them a break from their physically demanding chores while still feeling useful in doing so.
In the end, the Amish do have incredibly busy lives filled with long hard work throughout the day, but they also find time to create such things of beauty as the Amish quilts because they enjoy the process of making something from nothing while also providing for their families and community at large. Their creativity is allowed to be explored through bold colors and geometrics designs in their otherwise bland and static world. This is what makes the Amish so unique and this is what makes the Amish find the time to quilt.
